Perkuliahan Terakhir Ethnomathematics: Bagaimana Kita Sebagai Mahasiswa Researcher II

English Assignment - Reflection from Videos (part 2)

A.       Derivative Notation The derivative of f(x) is written as f'(x). We read it f prime of x. We can say it y' (y prime) because f(x) and y is interchangeable. Other we have notation dy/dx. It means the change in y's over the change in x's or we know it as slope. We say that the derivative is a slope of tangent line at specific point. We remember that the slope is change in y values over the change in x values. For the derivative we need two points. The first is (x, f(x)), f(x) is represented y. We can say that (x, f(x)) is the starting point (x,y). The second point is ((x+h),f(x+h)) with h is change in x. From those points we can find the slope of the line between points by slope formula. The formula is shown bellow. Slope=(change in y's)/(change in x's)=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1) Suppose that y1 is f(x), y2 is f(x+h), x1 is x, and x2 is x+h. So from the formula we get (f(x+h)-f(x))/(x+h-x)= (f(x+h)-f(x))/h h represent change in x values. If we put limit h approach...

ICEBERG Structure for Mathematics Learning Process II - Ethnomathemaitcs Reflection

ICEBERG Approach in Realistic Mathematics Mathematics is abstract, I admit that. Until now I still think that mathematics is complicated and always become the ‘unseen’ thing. If I, the university student, still think mathematics is abstract thing, then how about children in elementary school and junior high school? Maybe they will think that mathematics is from the outer-space. Realistic mathematics divides mathematics itself into four kinds: concrete mathematics, concrete model, formal model, and formal mathematics. Concrete mathematics is the lowest mathematics because we use a concrete object to deliver the material. The highest is, of course, the formal mathematics. Formal mathematics is used in university, used by mathematicians. We can say that formal mathematics is the abstract one. To facilitate students to understand the material, teacher can use the ICEBERG method. Here is the construction of ICEBERG. The floating capacity represents the mathematics learning...

Refleksi Ethnomathematics - The Reflection of Learning Mathematics

Ethnomathematics was one of the courses which teach us about how to understand mathematics from different sides. Especially the way we see mathematics from our culture. Indonesia is one of the countries with the richest culture. This makes us need to choose the culture we use to see the mathematics. Since I am a Javanese, then I use to see mathematics in Javanese way. Very traditional maybe, but that day Mr. Marsigit did question-answer session again. But this time he made me realize that the traditional way sometimes not good or not good enough to deliver the content of mathematics. The first question came from Brigitta Dini Laksitasari who asked Mr. Marsigit about ethno mathematics in abstract mathematics and how to apply it. The relationship between two humans has a dimension. Every relation is on its own phase. For example is the dimension of the relation between parents and children, and between teachers and their pupils. Even for food, it has dimension. First was the sim...
